W11 "Walk This Way"

This song is such a standard and pretty iconic, that is why I chose to write about it. I really liked the music video when we watched in class. It was fun to see these two competing at the beginning with rapping and then this hard rock. As the video goes on they go from a fight into a performance. I really liked it and have always heard the song but did not realize how iconic it really is. I didn't know much about Run-DMC and it was cool to see the foundation that they gave for rap. They really got it on the charts and got it to become a genre which is such an impressive feat. This collaboration also shows how diverse and mixed the music got too. Leading to today's day its hard to specifically identify some songs into one genre. Which I think is way cool that there isn't limits placed on musicians today for them to create however they want! I like Aerosmith and the lead singers voice! It's crazy how he can make it so raspy and sound like that! Overall it is just an ama...

W10 "Jump"

I really like this song, it's cool to see the synthesizer really becoming a part of music here in the 80s. Just the different sounds and rhythm from the synthesizer really just are the sound of the 80s. It's cool to also see the evolution of technology through out the 80s. Going more to Walkman's and CDs and seeing the accessibility become so big and really leads us to headphones and the technology that we have today. With the song, you can see how different it can be now that this technology is out you can really put a new spin on pop music. You see these synthesized songs become the popular music and start to trend. I love the catchy beat and rhythm of this song! Also I swear it's in so many movies too so that just takes me back too. It really is super catchy and just unique, like something that hasn't really been done before. I think with the synthesizer it's also really cool to see that people can have studios and recording booths in their own houses. The te...

W9 "Rapper's Delight"

What a song... This is super cool to hear and see the beginning of rap! How influential this song is, it has started and I feel like was such a foundation to rap. The lyrics are just everywhere and they are just spitting about so many different things. It is interesting how many similarities I can see in this rap song to rap songs today. I love the when he goes "A hip hop the hippa, the hippity to the hip-hip hop" I love just the different noises and rhythms that you can trow in rap. I like how you can just rap about anything and it can just either influence others, tell a story, or anything you want. Rap is so interesting with the solid background and beat yet it is so catchy sometimes and almost changes with the lyrics. One rapper I like is Macklemore, He just tells funny stories that is so random, funny, and just make you wanna scream and rap along. I get the same vibes to this song too, overall just a funny and interesting song. It's not one of my favorite rap songs e...

W8 "Crocodile Rock"

Man this song brings back so many memories! Elton John is such an interesting artist to me. Its crazy to see him still making music and influencing other today! he recently came out with an album with a ton of different pop artists and it actually wasn't bad! There are a couple of his songs that aren't my favorite, but Crocodile Rock is definitely one of my favorites. When I was little my grandma had an electric piano that would play different songs on it. Crocodile Rock was one of them and we would run and dance around! It is such an uplifting and upbeat song! Definitely the song takes me back to this period, even though I wasn't born then it's cool that the song just bring those vibes! It's so good, and I love just the steady beat of the drums and the strum of the guitar. The little "la la la la la", is super interesting and have that electronic sound to it too! I don't know why it is called crocodile rock, but it really is just a vibe. Overall super...

W7 "A Change is Gonna Come"

I knew pretty quick what song I wanted to do my blog on as soon as I heard A Change is Gonna Come in class. The beat and rhythm of this song is super relaxing and so upbeat too! I love the sway that it has too! This song really touched me early on, the message it carries just in those first words. "I was born by the river in a little tent... Oh, and just like the river I've been a-runnin' ever since." Just the power and sincerity in his voice just pierces me to the soul. The words take me back and make me think about the hate and persecution that the African-American's experienced at that time. Just feels my heart with so much sorrow, but looking back and seeing how it is today I love the hope that this song gives as well. They didn't know for sure that it would change, but I feel like Sam Cooke inspired others with his music and especially this song! I know that he really changed and brought light into the world especially for the African-Americans at that ti...

W6 “The Twist”

I chose to write about the Twist this week. It is honestly such a standard, this song is so good! It’s super iconic, it’s beat and rhythm just make you wanna get up and start dancing! I love how this song has appeared lots in different movies, Especially in the old Spider-Man with Toby Maguire. Where Harry and Mary Jane are cooking and start dancing to this song. #riptobey… but honestly this song is so catchy and I love how it really started the individualized dancing. It became such a huge influence to music going forward and really started that era off with a bang. What surprises me is Chubby Checkers voice, honestly it’s different than most. It’s got such an edge yet it’s smooth. Really quite yet it is super distinct, I love his name too!  Honestly the Twist really is that dance that started off all the other dances moving forward. There was different dances that got big but I feel like that kinda died off over time. The Twist really picked that back up again and it’s carried un...

W5 "Nature Boy"

Image
Nature Boy honestly surprised me a lot. I love the crooning of Nat "King'' Cole. His voice is super soothing and really paints a great picture as he is singing this story. I love the instrumental in the background especially when the piano plays through the verse as well. The violin really sets an almost suspicious and creepy tune, yet the song is very soothing. It's crazy to me that a song this catchy and popular. It's crazy to take into account the history of Nat "King'' Cole, being one of the first African- Americans to host a television series. He also was an actor and performed on Broadway! So cool that at that time with discrimination you see a man like Nat "King" Cole come on top! I love the influence he had on Jazz moving forward. As well as R&B and crooning too. It's cool to see all the different genres of music combine and complement each other in one way or another, and now the music we have today! People take things and id...
